[S-H]Chief sends letter to Choctaw voters

Chief Phillip Martin sent a letter to Choctaw voters this past week that said his opponent in the July 3 runoff election is being backed by those who want to keep the tribe from opening a casino in Jackson County. However, his opponent Beasley Denson says otherwise.

“That’s ludicrous,” Beasley Denson countered in a phone interview Wednesday. “I don’t know anybody down there,” and he said he hasn’t visited the Coast since Hurricane Katrina. His campaign funds are his own money, he said, and contributions from tribal members and other supporters. “I’m going for broke, I guess.”

Denson beat Martin in the June 12 election by 37 votes, 1,390 to Martin’s 1,353. About 68 percent of the 4,700 eligible voters reportedly cast a ballot. Because there were several candidates and Denson didn’t receive a majority of the vote, the runoff election will determine the tribal chief.

The chief is getting too old and needs to step down, the Casino’s are in bad need of a chief that is active.  Chief Martin has done a wonderful job, but he should go ahead and step down.  It is rumored that the ones pushing for him to win plan on replacing him with soneone else once he is re-elected.  They just don’t want Beasley in there because he wants to see those financial records.  The ones running chief’s campaign are paying people for their votes.  It is sick, and a shame to the choctaw people.
