[Release]Eaves joins crusade to avoid insurance industry influence

Speaking from Biloxi today, John Arthur Eaves Jr., leading Democratic candidate for Governor, signed a pledge to refuse to take campaign contributions from the insurance industry, including insurance companies, insurance PACs and executives of insurance companies.

"The insurance crisis is preventing us from rebuilding on the coast,” Eaves said. “Elected officials, including the governor, cannot protect the interests of hardworking Mississippians while taking campaign contributions from the insurance industry. As governor, my hands will not be tied because I will not be beholden to the influence of big insurance companies.”

Eaves cited Gov. Haley Barbour’s latest campaign finance report, which showed nearly $70,000 in contributions from insurance companies. Barbour also has a history of working to protect insurance companies, receiving at least $100,000 to lobby on their behalf.

Last week, Gary Anderson, Democratic candidate for insurance commissioner, pointed out potential conflicts in incumbent Insurance Commissioner George Dale’s administration because of the large number of contributions he has
received from insurance companies. Eaves signed onto Anderson’s pledge today, and challenged Gov. Haley Barbour to return the contributions he has received and refuse to accept any additional contributions from insurance
companies.

“It is time for Mississippians to elect public servants who serve the interests of the public over any other,” Eaves said. “The Bible teaches that a person cannot serve two masters, he will hate one and love the other. You cannot serve God and money.  Neither can you serve both the people and the moneyed interests.  The focus of my campaign and my tenure as Governor will be on service to God and service to my fellow Mississippians, and I will
work to bring Mississippians together and make their needs a priority over those of the greedy moneychangers who have been holding back our rebuilding efforts.”

That’s some move, and then he quoted Scriptures too.  I think he’s won over a lot of church folk.
