[Release]Attorney General Holds Statewide Conference on Domestic Violence
Attorney General Jim Hood and the Domestic Violence Division of
the Attorney Generals Office is sponsoring this week the first of two
statewide conferences on domestic violence. “Domestic Violence in our
Communities: Enhancing the Legal Response” is co-hosted by the Mississippi
Coalition Against Domestic Violence, and is targeted to law enforcement,
prosecutors, judges, court clerks, probation and parole officials and others
providing services to victims of domestic violence.
Domestic violence is the root of many violent offenses,Ӳ said Attorney
General Jim Hood. It creates one of the most volatile and dangerous
situations our law enforcement officers walk in on. This conference is
designed to bring together these different yet equally important parts of
the justice system to encourage them to work together in a coordinated
fashion to enhance the systemӹs response to the crime of domestic violence,
as well as heightening victim safety and offender accountability. So far,
over 300 participants have registered for the event which is being held June
13-14, 2007 at the Silverstar Hotel Conference Center in Philadelphia.
Since the creation of the Domestic Violence Division in October of 2006,
approximately 500 law enforcement officers, 50 prosecutors, 200 court
clerks, 50 judges and 100 private attorneys have received education on some
aspect of domestic violence. ҳThe goal of this education is to encourage
appropriate handling of domestic violence cases focusing on victim safety
and offender accountability, said Attorney General Jim Hood.
The conference includes national-level speakers such as Denise Brown,
Founder and chairman of the Nicole Brown Foundation, established in 1994 in
memory of her sister. “I congratulate Jim Hood for establishing a Domestic
Violence Division in Mississippi,Ҳ said Denise Brown. Domestic violence is
a national epidemic and we all need to work together to stop the violence in
our communities. I am honored to be speaking at your event and standing
beside proactive individuals working towards a violence free society.Ӳ
Other national speakers include Dr. David Adams, Co-Founder and Co-Director
of Emerge, the first counseling program in the nation for men who abuse
women and Sergeant Scott Jenkins, a police officer for 25 years and
currently a supervisory sergeant of the Duluth (Minnesota) Police Organized
Crime Bureau-Office of Special Investigations and the current supervisor of
the Lake Superior Drug & Gang Task Force. Attorney General Jim Hood will
speak at Noon, Wednesday, June 13.
Conference sponsors, including Verizon Wireless, Inc. and Deuce McAllister
Motors, show the commitment of the Domestic Violence Division in working
with the business community to raise awareness of domestic violence.
