[Release]AG Jim Hood Plans to Hold Conference to Address the Legal Aspects of Domestic Violence
Attorney General Jim Hood is holding a conference in Choctaw, Mississippi, that is designed to enhance the legal system’s response to victims of domestic violence and its perpetrators by “heightening victim safety and offender countability.”
Jackson, MS-Attorney General Jim Hood and The Domestic Violence Division of the Attorney Generals Office are hosting a statewide domestic violence conference on June 13-14, 2007, in Choctaw, Mississippi.
The conference, entitled “Domestic Violence in our Communities: Enhancing the Legal Response” is co-hosted by the Mississippi Coalition Against Domestic Violence, and is targeted to law enforcement, prosecutors, judges, court clerks, probation and parole officials and others providing services to victims of domestic violence. “This conference is designed to bring together these different yet equally important parts of the justice system to encourage them to work together in a coordinated fashion to enhance the systemٹs response to the crime of domestic violence, as well as heightening victim safety and offender accountability,” said Attorney General Hood.
Cutting edge information will be provided by a number of local and national speakers to include Denise Brown of the Nicole Brown Simpson Foundation, David Adams, Co-Found and Co-Director of Emerge, Inc., and Sergeant Scott Jenkins of the Duluth, Minnesota, Police Department.
There is no registration fee for participants. The conference is being funded by grants from the U.S. Department of Justice, Office on Violence Against Women (Award #2006-WE-AX-0054) and the Mississippi Department of Public Safety, Division of Public Safety Planning (Project #05SP4021).

I see Kenneth Stokes is angling for Hinds County Board of Supervisors, District 5. If he were to win, would he be resigning from the City Council?
Cheers,

Doesn’t look like a typo, Tom. We’ll see.

Well, Tom, I checked the list again, and Jeffery Stallworth is running for Tax Assessor. Actually, it looks like everybody and their mama is running.

Good catch, Latasha--this is going to be an interesting bunch of elections. I’m keeping my fingers crossed for Gary Anderson in the insurance commissioner’s race, and of course Faye Peterson and Malcolm McMillin in the county primaries.

Tom, someone told me that they don’t like Faye and won’t for her, but they’re not going to vote at all because they don’t want to be picked for jury duty any more. Now, how can you say who you don’t want to win if you don’t even vote against one of the challengers?
Okay, let me get off my soapbox…

Well, if the person in question was going to vote against Faye Peterson anyway, I don’t particularly mind if they skip this one… ;o)
I support Faye Peterson primarily because I have never heard a well articulated case against her. Low prosecution rate? Well, how low relative to other cities of similar size with similar demographics and similar DA funding? Crickets chirp. Did she “target” Melton? Well, do we really want a DA who would ignore malicious mischief charges if the perpetrator were the mayor? Crickets chirp. And then there’s all the speculation about her sex life, which is really none of our damn business. Wish crickets would chirp on that one.
Faye Peterson could very well be a terrible DA for all I know. Or the greatest DA in the country. Until her challengers produce contextualized data that I can use to make a realistic assessment of her performance, I have no reason to doubt her competence.
On the flip side, unless Peterson can produce contextualized data that documents her competence, her critics can say pretty much whatever they want about her performance as DA.
I don’t think her challengers are necessarily bad people. But they haven’t really put up any good reasons to vote for themselves or against her. Not that I’ve heard, anyway; I still haven’t had time to listen to the Purvis interview. Latasha, have you heard it? Is there any meat there?
Cheers,
TH

I heard it, and I think she tried to focus on herself and stay neutral although a couple of things she said made me think otherwise. At one point, she said Faye “would have to live with” some decision she made, and I didn’t like the tone of that. Also, if you look at her forum on her Web page, the discussion topics imply that there is a problem with the current DA, in my opinion.

Thanks for this. Going by her web site, I figured she was running an all-negative campaign and decided I didn’t even really want to hear that interview. I may have to give it a listen after all…
Cheers,
