[Release] 42 House Members Delay MAEP
[Verbatim Release] The 2007 Session of the Mississippi Legislature convened today (Tuesday, January 2, 2007). As promised by the House leadership, the Mississippi House of Representatives took up bills that call for full funding of the MAEP (House Bill 238) and funding for a 3% teacher pay raise. The House leadership had vowed to show that providing our children a quality education was their number one priority by passing out a full funding bill the first day of the session.
Consideration of an appropriations bill on the first day of the session requires that 2/3 of the voting body agree to suspend the rules, a common procedural vote used in many different situations. But today’s vote was not a common one. Today’s vote demonstrated who among our Representatives are true, blue supporters of quality public education and who are not. Under pressure to delay a vote on education funding until late in the session, 42 Representatives voted against considering education funding today. The motion to suspend the rules failed by one vote. Your Representative’s vote is critically important. You can see the results of that vote at http://www.msparentscampaign.org/docs/VOTES.doc>.
Please call your Representative today. Tell your representative that fully funding the MAEP should be the top priority and should be voted in NOW ! If you live in the Jackson metro area, call your representative at home or at the capitol. All Representatives can be reached at the Capitol by calling 601-359-3770. It is very important that you let your Representative know that you are watching these votes and that fully funding MAEP should not be delayed.
