Partisan Flap Over Timing of Special Election
The Daily Journal is reporting that Barbour says the special election to replace Lott should be next Election Day (the same day as the presidential election), and the state’s Dems want it to be within 90 days, presumably so Barbour’s choice doesn’t serve any longer than (inevitably) he has to. We’re not sure the state’s beleaguered Dems are being smart on this one: Can they turn out enough voters in a special election to win a statewide election? They might just need the help of a national turnout to have a snowball’s chance in Gulfport of winning this one. Of course we’ve been wrong before (but seldom about the state’s Democrats).
Here’s what Jere Nash has to say about the scuffle:
The politics of the timing of the special election is causing some angst, as Democrats are already sniping at the Governor saying that he has to set it earlier than next November. And, of course, the politics of the preferred major party candidates will swirl around the state and around Washington, D.C. as both parties scramble madly to field their best standard bearers. This process of candidate selection is made more difficult by the law controlling special elections in our state. We will have no party primaries, so everyone who wants to run, regardless of party, will appear on one ballot, with a majority vote required to win. It’s quite possible that more than one candidate from each of the major parties could disregard the urgings of party leaders and jump into the race regardless of whether they are supported by party structures. People are funny that way.
