[C-L]JPS will start out 2007-08 school year with $220 million balanced budget
The school board approved the budget on Monday night after giving a no-go to budget requests that included raises for non-teaching staff members. The primary reasons for the largest increases were benefits and mandated salary hikes, including a 3 percent salary increase for teachers.
“I was happy they were able to get to a balanced budget so we don’t have to go into the reserves,” board President Delmer Stamps said.
The board already plans to use about $3.7 million of its $18 million reserve fund to pay for unanticipated expenses from the 2006-07 school year, which included hiring additional teachers at the beginning of last school year to make sure classes weren’t too large for state regulations.
But Stamps said the board will revisit the district’s finances every quarter to see whether raises and other district needs, such as regular district maintenance, could be possible.
