[AP] Neshoba Newspaper Editor to Get Journalism Award

The Associated Press is reporting on the Editor & Publisher Web site that our good friend, and mentor, Stanley Dearman is being honored for his editorials calling for the prosecution of the men who killed James Chaney, Andrew Goodman and Michael Schwerner in 1964:

he Silver Em award will be presented to Dearman at an April 19 banquet in Oxford.

In 2000, Dearman pushed authorities to pursue charges for the first time against the killers of Michael Schwerner, James Chaney and Andrew Goodman. “It’s time for an accounting,” Dearman wrote. “We hope that the attorney general and the district attorney conclude that the case can be effectively prosecuted. It’s time.

[News] Cochran Backs More Troops, Lott Balks

From the Clarion-Ledger:

Sen. Thad Cochran was one of about a dozen Republican senators who was invited to the White House on Monday to preview the president’s plan.

“I was surprised I was the only one who said I would support him,” Cochran said. “I think the president should be given a chance to make this work.”

Cochran said many of his GOP colleagues are “kind of waiting to see what the details are.”

Sen. Trent Lott said he is willing to study the president’s proposal but won’t support a troop surge unless it’s part of a broader plan.

[Opinion] Editorial: Must We Fight This (Education) Fight Again?

From the Clarion-Ledger’s Editorial board:

...House Republicans voted as a block against a procedural move that would’ve allowed a quick vote, prompting House Speaker Billy McCoy, D-Rienzi, to say he was “shocked beyond comprehension” by the “obviously organized opposition.”

This, after Gov. Barbour softened his opposition to fully funding MAEP, telling The Associated Press: “I fully expect us to have enough money” so that “it’s funded at 100 percent.”

What were the lawmakers thinking?

[Opinion] Ledge Says It’s ‘Issues, Not Elections’

Noting that both the House and Senate are Democrat majorities, a C-L editorial spells out some challenges given that the House remains independent of the Governor while the Senate does not. Lame-duck Amy Tuck may or may not be “at the reins” of Governor Barbour, who has called for spending bills to be passed in March; House Speaker Billy McCoy (D-Rienzi) has to shore up his leadership position as he attempts to cram Mississippi Adequate Education Funding through.

The major money issue is education, with the House supporting full funding of the Mississippi Adequate Education Program and some wanting to spend less.

In the cauldron of competing interests, it’s anyone’s guess what lawmakers will produce after 90 days. But the test will be staying focused on issues not elections.
